Epidemiology consulting, New York

Epidemiology that sees the whole population, not just the people who show up at the clinic.

Epidemic Intelligence is a boutique epidemiology firm. We design and run cohort studies with at-home specimen collection, evaluate public health programs, and turn data into evidence that public health agencies, sponsors and research teams can act on, across infectious diseases from respiratory viruses to HIV.

What we do

Three things we do well

Cohorts with at-home specimen collection

National, longitudinal and online, with self-collected specimens at home. Kits travel to and from participants through the mail. We have done it four times at national scale, and we know how to do it fast.

Program evaluation and surveillance

Evaluation design, program and clinical data review, surveillance data systems and dashboards, and statistical analysis for health departments and program funders. HIV is a particular strength: we can field a bench of HIV specialists matched to the question.

Expert advisory and analysis

Study design, surveillance system design, data systems and dashboards, analysis and interpretation. For agencies, sponsors and research teams that need a senior epidemiologist in the room.

Built by the team behind

  • Project PROTECTS
  • CHASING COVID Cohort
  • NYC hospital wastewater surveillance
  • New York City Ryan White HIV program evaluations
  • Ending the HIV Epidemic dashboards
  • Central Africa IeDEA

Led by Denis Nash, former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officer and former Director of HIV/AIDS Surveillance for New York City, who has spent more than 25 years building cohort studies and surveillance systems and has published more than 370 peer-reviewed papers. See the work.

For government

We know how public health agencies work, because we have worked inside them and alongside them

Health departments and federal agencies are a core part of our work. We take on surveillance design, program evaluations, rapid studies and technical assistance, as a prime contractor or as a partner on larger contracts.

Talk to us about a project

  • CDC. Denis Nash began his career as a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officer, and the team has carried out CDC-funded research for two decades.
  • New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Denis directed the city's HIV/AIDS surveillance, and the team is a long-standing academic partner evaluating its Ryan White HIV care programs.
  • New York State. The team built the state's public Ending the Epidemic dashboard for tracking HIV.
  • NYC Health + Hospitals. The team built and ran wastewater surveillance across the city's public hospitals.
  • PEPFAR. Much of the team's HIV research in more than 20 sub-Saharan African countries has been carried out in connection with the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
Why us

Scientists, not a sales team

Rigor beyond description

Current causal inference and modern epidemiologic design, randomized trials embedded in cohorts, and large trials of implementation strategies. You get a study designed to answer the question, not just to describe the data.

Evidence that holds up

Our team has spent decades producing work that survives peer review. Where we run a study, we can build in the protocols, analysis plans and publication rights that make the results credible.

Small and senior

Every engagement is scoped, priced and staffed for the question at hand, with senior people doing the thinking and long-standing partners handling laboratory work and logistics.
